Unaged White Rum
We are passionate about bringing Rum to the forefront of UK spirit drinking.
After many years of drinking rums from all over the world, and selling rum through The Rum Club, we have built up a very keen understanding of what makes a good rum.
1968 Rum is the product of all this investment. It’s a deliberate mix of several different types and styles of Rum, drawing on how our favourite rums are made around the world. This is not your usual pot stilled Molasses Rum, we use fine cane from Central America to produce a sweet, flavoursome Rum, which is smooth enough to drink just on ice, but has enough floral content to make a fabulous T-Punch or rock a Mojito.
Our raw product, dehydrated cane juice comes to us from sunny Costa Rica.
Our local partner is Assukkar, a company owned and managed by the Ortuño family. In the Turrialba region, the climate is tropical and humid throughout the whole year, meaning sugar cane can be harvested without interruption.
Harvest time depends on sugar content and maturity. Approximately 2 m high sugar is not burned but cut by hand. The stalks are separated directly above the ground and tops under the sugarless leaf system. The leaves remain as mulch on the field. They serve as protection against erosion and green manure. Pests are biologically controlled.
This wonderful, rich and unique product is then re-hydrated and boiled to form a beautiful syrup which we then ferment to make 1968 Rum.
We’ll be turning batches of 1968 Rum into aged spirits using the old gunpowder magazines in Fort Cumberland. Available to buy in just five years time.
